Flash Flood in Bhote Koshi River of Nepal

Nepal was struck by a severe flash flood in the morning of 26 August 2026 which resulted in loss of life, widespread displacement and extensive damage to homes, schools, hospitals, and public infrastructures including roads, bridges, hydropower plants and other critical infrastructure.

The Government of Nepal has fully mobilized all of its efforts for search and rescue, evacuation, emergency medical assistance and relief operations. Authorities are also closely monitoring flood risks.

So far, 175 bodies have been recovered, while many people, both locals and foreign tourists, are still missing. According to the latest available information, 624 people from 32 countries have been reported missing. These figures remain subject to verification as search and rescue operations continue.

At this stage, our immediate priority is to save lives and support search and rescue, evacuation and relief efforts in the affected areas. In view of the extensive damage caused by the floods, the Government will continue to assess the situation and emerging needs on the ground and, where necessary, communicate specific requirements for assistance through established official channels.

The Mission acknowledges the kind messages received from the President of the Swiss Confederation and senior officials of the Swiss Government, the Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives based in Geneva, the Heads and high-officials of the International Organizations, the friends of Nepal in the International Geneva and the members of Nepali community in Switzerland.
