The Rt. Hon’ble Speaker Addresses the 6th World Conference of Speakers in Geneva
Rt. Hon’ble Mr. Dev Raj Ghimire, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nepal and the leader of the Nepali delegation to the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament addressed the Conference at Palais des Nations in Geneva today.
Rt. Hon’ble Speaker highlighted on the significance of inter-parliamentary processes in creating a more dynamic and inclusive world. He referred to parliamentarians as not just the representatives of electorates but also as the vehicles to strengthen international cooperation. He stressed on the need to translate international agreements and commitments into domestic policies, and called upon all stakeholders to come together to work for peace, justice and prosperity for all.
Later, the Rt. Hon’ble Speaker participated in the panel discussion under the theme, ‘What role for parliaments in shaping our digital future?’ where he shared the progress made in the Federal Parliament of Nepal regarding the strengthening of digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, digital archives and data security.
Later today, Rt. Hon’ble Speaker Mr. Dev Raj Ghimire had a fruitful meeting with President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) H.E. Ms. Tulia Ackson and discussed the ways to further consolidate the inter-parliamentary cooperation.
Earlier today, Rt. Hon’ble Speaker Mr. Ghimire held a bilateral meeting with H.E. Ms. Maja Riniker, President of the National Council of the Federal Assembly of the Swiss Confederation. The two leaders had a cordial discussion on strengthening Nepal-Switzerland relations and cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries.
Rt. Hon’ble Mr. Ghimire had separate bilateral meetings with H.E. Ms. Verona Murphy, Chairwoman of Dáil Éireann of Ireland and H.E. Mr. Lungten Dorji, Speaker of the National Assembly of Bhutan this morning.
Likewise, the Rt. Hon’ble Speaker Ghimire held separate bilateral meetings with H.E. Mr. Angelo Farrugia, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malta and H.E. Mr. Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, Chairman of Senate of Pakistan on the sidelines of the Conference yesterday.
Later in the evening today, Rt. Hon’ble Speaker Mr. Dev Raj Ghimire visited the Permanent Mission and took stock of the activities, priorities, and engagements of Nepal in Geneva.
Rt. Hon’ble Mr. Dev Raj Ghimire, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nepal is leading a high-level Nepali delegation to the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament comprising of Hon. Mr. Ek Nath Dhakal, Member of the House of Representatives, H.E. Mr. Ram Prasad Subedi, Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, officials from the Secretariat of the Federal Parliament and the Permanent Mission of Nepal in Geneva.
Arrived in Geneva on 28 July, the Rt. Hon’ble Speaker was warmly received by Ambassador Subedi at the VIP lounge upon arrival at the Geneva International Airport. He is scheduled to meet Speakers from various friendly countries tomorrow, and depart from Geneva on 2 August 2025.
