Ambassador /Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva
His Excellency Mr. Mani Prasad Bhattarai assumed the Office of the Ambassador / Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations Office, World Trade Organization and other International Organizations in Geneva since 12 April 2019.
Ambassador Bhattarai is a career diplomat. He has held a wide range of responsibilities in his three-decade-long career in the civil service of Nepal.
Prior to this appointment, Mr. Bhattarai was the Head /Joint Secretary of Policy Planning, Economic Diplomacy, and Non-Resident Nepalis Division; General Administration Division; and the Regional Organizations Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from March 2016 to April 2019.
Earlier, Mr. Bhattarai was the Charge d’Affaires a.i. at the Embassy of Nepal in Manama, Bahrain from November 2014 to August 2015.
Mr. Bhattarai was the Counsellor/ Minister Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations in New York from July 2010 to July 2014. He was especially assigned to backstop Nepal’s chairmanship at the Global LDC Coordination Bureau (2009-2013) in New York. He was a team member during the intergovernmental negotiations on the Istanbul Program of Action for the Least Developed Countries and also attended the 4th UN Conference on the LDCs held in Istanbul in May 2011.
Mr. Bhattarai led and negotiated on behalf of the LDCs in the G-77 and China for the annual resolution on the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action as well as other thematic resolutions to be tabled at both ECOSOC and the Second Committee of UN General Assembly. He also led and negotiated, at the expert level, on behalf of G77 and China, the LDC chapter in the outcome document of the 2012 Rio+20 Conference. He participated in the South-South Conference held in Nairobi in 2009.
Mr. Bhattarai has participated in several sessions of the United Nations General Assembly convened annually during 2007-2017 as a member of Nepali delegation. He also took part in the different segment of ECOSOC sessions held in Geneva in 2012 and 2014. He participated in a couple of sessions of the Human Rights Council and thematic conferences held in Geneva During 2008-2010.
Mr. Bhattarai participated in the Summit, Ministerial and Senior-official meetings of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) and Asian Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) as the head of Regional Organization Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal during the Nepal’s Chairmanship period 2014-2018. He chaired the sessions of SAARC Programming Committee and the BIMSTEC Joint Working Group Meetings during Nepal’s chairmanship.
From January 2005 to June 2010, Mr. Bhattarai was Under-Secretary at the South Asia Division, North East Division and UN and International Law Division in the Ministry. He was Desk Officer separately for India and China affairs.
Mr. Bhattarai was a planning officer at the National Planning Commission of Nepal for over a decade.
Mr. Bhattarai holds the Master’s Degree in MBA and English Literature from Tribhuvan University in 1989 and 1995 respectively. He also received a Master’s Degree in Economics of Development Studies from the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague in December 1996.
Mr. Bhattarai obtained Diploma in Development Policies from the International Development Center of Japan in 2001, where he was also conferred the Excellent Achievement Award for submitting the best research paper. He participated in several training programmes including the Workshop on Effective Negotiation in Multilateral Conferences conducted by UNITAR in New York in November 2011.
Mr. Bhattarai was born in Morang district, Nepal on 19 July 1963. He and his wife Mrs. Laxmi Rijal Bhattarai have one daughter.
