Honourable Mr. Mahendra Bahadur Pandey, Minister for Foreign Affairs, attended the inaugural session of the 28th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva today. The inauguration session was followed by the High-level Segment of the Human Rights Council, which is being attended by more than a hundred high-level dignitaries, including the Presidents, Prime Ministers and Ministers, from the Member States. The High-level Segment will continue until the 5th of March 2015.

At the sidelines of the Session, Honourable Minister had a meeting with H.E. Mr. Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka today. The cooperation between both countries in the international fora, including the issues of the human rights, as well as the promotion of regional cooperation through the mechanism of SAARC were discussed during the meeting. Two Ministers also shared views about the recent developments in both countries. Honourable Minister congratulated the Sri Lankan Minister on the democratic transfer of power following the successful presidential elections held recently in Sri Lanka. Both Ministers discussed the need for enhanced cooperation among SAARC Member States to further promote socio-economic development in the region. In this respect, the Sri Lankan Minister called upon Nepal to take initiatives as the current chair of the SAARC.

Honourable Minister is scheduled to deliver his statement at the High-level Segment of the Council tomorrow.

Honourable Mr. Mahendra Bahadur Pandey arrived in Geneva yesterday to attend the High-level Segment of the 28th Session of the Human Rights Council. During his arrival at the Airport, Honourable Minister was welcomed by H.E. Mr. Deepak Dhital, Ambassador/Permanent Representative of Nepal. The Delegation of Nepal to the Human Rights Council includes H.E. Ambassador/PR as well as officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Permanent Mission of Nepal in Geneva. The Human Rights Council session will continue until 27 March 2015.
